My life plus 10 years

Ten years ago, both kids had bronchitis and strep throat. They were pathetically miserable. It was the whole package of fever, nausea, squirty dukes and barfing. Such is the glamorous life of a Mom.

My daughter was 10, so she managed get to the toilet as needed. My son was 6, so he pretty much exploded at regular intervals in whatever blanket he was wrapped up in. So it went, all day long. I must have done a zillion loads of laundry.

Then Mr. Wonderful called and said he was going to have to work late. That made the kids teary and even more pathetic. I fed them early and put them to sleep.

I was exhausted; just out of the shower, in my pj’s looking at the TV Guide. 8pm - “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I thought GREAT. I was the one person who saw the original movie at the theatre and enjoyed it. It seemed like a big reward to get a repeat viewing after the day I had.

But it wasn't the movie. It was something completely different.

I remember laughing out loud, being scared and trying never to miss an episode after. From the start I thought it was wonderful and funny.

I had never really gotten into a television show before. When I was little my Dad and I watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. After college I watched Dynasty because my roommate loved it. I vaguely remember Miami Vice or X-Files some Friday nights if there was nothing else to do.

Buffy was the first time I ever followed a television show from week to week. I took a lot of ribbing from my CNN colleges, but they gave me a life size Spike cutout one year for Christmas. I still have in my bedroom – tolerated by Mr. Wonderful.

It was almost a year after Buffy ended when I complained to a CNN buddy “I miss the show.” She said, “Try fan fiction.” I had no idea such a thing existed.

So thank you, EVERYONE, for writing such wonderful stories AND for sharing your lives. I enjoy both every day. You are an amazing bunch of people.
